The European Saxophone Ensemble 2013 brings together twelve young saxophone players from twelve different countries.
After the first 3 years under the artistic direction of Cezariusz Gadzina, the European Saxophone Ensemble has since 2012 new artistic director Guillaume Orti. He is a French composer and saxophonist who’s inspiration lies in the universe of Steve Coleman and Karnatic Music. He is most known as a member of bands like Kartet, Mâäk and Octurn, The Progressive Patriots and Andy Emler MegaOctet.
Jorrit Dijkstra, Irene Galindo Quero, Will Menter, Nick Roth, Yochk'o Seffer and André Vida have been invited to compose new music for the ensemble. In these compositions improvisation will take a prominent role as a means for the different saxophonists to express themselves as individuals as well as a group.
The resulting concert will be created in a way that it can be performed in various spaces: outdoors as well as indoors; in the city centre or in the middle of nature; in a concert hall or a train station, a marketplace, an apartment, an industrial environment.
Movement and the use of space will be integrated as a means of changing the dynamics of the acoustic experience of the performance.
The saxophonists are between 19 and 33 years old and come from various musical backgrounds: from a modern jazz tenor saxophonist to a kitsch and glamour vienna alto, from a chamber sopranino to a New York Jazz style tenor and Sax repareman, from a spanish ska inspired soprano to a punk bass saxophonist.
A very exciting ensemble full of positive energy, with an incredible group sound.
Between June and October 2013 the Ensemble will perform on at least ten different European scenes. More information in the calendar.
The European Saxophone Ensemble is a MET-X production, with the support of the culture programme of the European Union.
MET-X is a house for and from musicians. They transform sounds from the belly of the city into a unique musical universe. In close collaboration with enthusiastic artists coming from the most different horizons they manufacture the creative elements in order to form bands, events and educational processes.
Aubergine Artist Management supports the ESE project in the artistic coordination.
The European Saxophone ensemble was initiated in 2008 by Cezariusz Gadzina. Since then, the ensemble has toured every year throughout Europe. The first CD "Reed Action" was recorded in 2008, the second "Aeration" in 2010, the third has been recorded live in KVS Brussels in 2012.
